LIABILITY COVERAGE

Liability coverage is one of the most basic types of auto insurance coverage, and one of the few types that is mandatory in every state, including California. If you are found to be at fault for a car accident, liability coverage helps pay for damage to the other person's property and costs associated with their injuries. This means there are two components of liability coverage: property damage liability and bodily injury liability.

What does Liability Insurance cover?

Liability insurance will cover damages you cause in a car accident, including:

  • Bodily Injury to occupants of your vehicle or the other person's vehicle. This includes hospital and medical bills, rehab, long-term nursing care, pain and suffering and lost earnings.
  • Funeral Expenses if someone dies as the result of the accident.
  • Property Damage to the other person's vehicle.
  • Expense to repair or replace damage items such as lamp posts, homes or a pet.
  • Legal Defense Costs if you are sued as a result of an accident.

Liability coverage rarely covers damage to your own vehicle or costs associated with your own injuries.

Liability Coverage Limits

As you compare insurance quotes, pay attention to the liability coverage options and the limits.

  • Property Damage Liability Limit. This is the maximum amount the policy will pay for damage to another person's property. If your limit is $30,000 but you cause $40,000 in damage, for example, you would be responsible for the other $10,000.
  • Bodily Injury Liability Limit Per Person. This is the maximum your insurance company will pay for each person harmed in an accident you cause, up to the policy limit.
  • Bodily Injury Liability Per Accident. This is the maximum your insurance company will pay for all damages associated with a single accident you caused.
