HOMEOWNER'S INSURANCE

Homeowners insurance, also known as home insurance, allows you to protect your family, home and belongings with a policy that covers your actual home as well as your valuables and belongings. Your homeowner’s policy can also cover you for many other expenses, including medical treatment if someone gets hurt on your property.

What does home insurance cover?

A standard homeowner’s insurance policy will offer the following types of coverage up to the limits of your policy:
  • Dwelling. Your policy will pay for damage or destruction to your home and unattached structures and buildings. This includes sheds, detached garages and fences.
  • Personal property. Your policy will cover the contents of your home from theft, damage and destruction. This includes furniture, clothing, appliances and electronics.
  • Liability. Your policy will protect you against financial loss if you are sued and found responsible for someone else's property damage or injury.
  • Medical Payments. Your home policy will pay medical bills for someone injured on your property. In some cases, the coverage can extend beyond your home, such as if your pet bites someone.
  • Loss of Use. Your policy will pay for living expenses if your home is rendered inhabitable during repairs.
There are also many types of optional coverage, including:
  • Guaranteed Replacement Cost. This option offers the most complete coverage for your house, although you will need to meet certain underwriting requirements and conditions.
  • Inflation Guard Endorsement. This option automatically adjusts your limits so they remain at at least 80% of your home's replacement cost to keep up with inflation.
  • Scheduled Personal Property Endorsement. This coverage option covers many personal belongings that may be more expensive, such as antiques, coins, guns, stamps, jewelry and furs.
